Helen Thomas, American Hero

Wed Apr 23, 2008 at 09:25:51 PM PDT

Helen Thomas spoke out against torture, and the silence of the media regarding torture, in a press conference with Dana Perino, and apparently, no one noticed.

We only care about elections.  We only care who said what, and when, and how it will affect the ratings for our massive industry.  No.  CNN, MSNBC, and FOX haven't stated that, as such, but isn't it the truth?  For them?

For us the the truth is another thing.  A real thing.  And thankfully, we have Helen Thomas, and truth is ours.

While we, and the media, are consumed with elections, as well we, should be, but the media, well, they do have another duty or responsiblitly, and that is to inform us, and they are falling flat on their faces doing that.

No big surprise there, now, is there?

Helen Thomas asked a question of Dana Perino, large gaping hole for the whitehouse, on April 9th:

THOMAS: The president has said [...] we do not torture. Now he has admitted that he did sign off on torture, he did know about it. So how do you reconcile this credibility gap? [...]

Large gaping hole, Perino, responded with this zinger:

PERINO: The United States has not, is not torturing any detainees in the global war on terror. And General Hayden, amongst others, have spoken on Capitol Hill fully in this regard. [...] And you can go back through all the public record.

Liar, liar, pants on fire!  Childish I know, but come on, really.  Who still believes a word she says?

General Hayden confirmed the use of waterboarding, which is torture, in anyone's book.  He did it while testifying before congress, for the whole country to see.

Until Hayden's comments before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence today, no senior U.S. intelligence official had publicly acknowledged the technique.

We hate torture, as American people, and we do not condone nor do we support the use of torture.  So why does our own government think we do?  Is it us, or is it them?  It's them.

At the time a presidential finding was signed in 2002 approving the use of harsh interrogation techniques including waterboarding, one of the CIA's most senior officials registered his objections to the technique, which a senior intelligence official failed to acknowledge today when he stated on the condition of anonymity that the current debate over the use of the technique is troubling to intelligence professionals. In fact, a number of intelligence professionals, current and former, object to the use of the technique.

Over the objections of a nation, while lying and lying once again, this president has, in our name, tortured, and he has condoned it.  We, as a nation of free people, do not.

So, here is to Helen Thomas!  Hip! Hip! Hooray!  A voice in the wilderness, speaking out for a nation lost in that same wilderness.

She has been a voice that has plagued this administraion from the very beginning, and she has paid a price for that, as well.

But she has never let us down, the people who read her, and depend on her, for the truth.

You can send Helen an email at her address, and believe it or not, she will email you back.  I have received her emails, they are short, to the point, but honest.  Which I appreciate.

Here is her email.  Thank her, will you, please?
