Senator Feinstein to Moody Loner: Screw You.
Fri Jun 20, 2008 at 09:23:24 AM PDT
I've been emailing my Senators and Representative pretty regularly regarding various topics of interest, including but not limited to impeachment.
This morning, I recieved something I never thought I'd get from dear Senator Feinstein...a response.
Guess her staffers figured out how the mail merge function works in Outlook.
The response, my response to her response, and her response to my response to her response, under the fold.
Dear [Moody Loner]:
Thank you for your letter concerning impeachment proceedings against President Bush. I appreciate the time you took to write and welcome the opportunity to respond.
In our recent elections, the American people expressed clear disapproval with the path this country was on. They are tired of partisan politics and of an Administration that pays little heed to the wishes of the American people. They want-and deserve-a Congress that holds the Administration accountable and fulfills its Constitutional responsibility to check and balance the Executive. I share this sentiment and am determined to work hard and across party lines in the United States Senate to promote issues that are of real concern to most Americans, including the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan, homeland security, global warming, and lobbying and election reform.
At this time, however, I believe that impeachment proceedings against President Bush will only divide the country even further, frustrating our hopes for a meaningful change in direction, while having little chance of success.
I have been deeply disappointed by many of this Administration's actions and have been outspoken in those instances. Nevertheless, given the challenges our country faces I believe that we need to focus on constructive and cooperative steps that would lead us in the right direction.
Again, thank you for your continued correspondence. If you have any further questions or comments, please contact my office in Washington, D.C. at (202) 224-3841. Best regards.
Sincerely yours,
Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator
I, of course, thinking for a moment that this form-letter response is something akin to a real email, dash off a response:
Considering the success that Congress has had in ending the war in Iraq, considering how well "subpoena power" has worked out - how, then, do you suggest holding the President and his Administration accountable for the crimes that they have admitted to committing while in office, let alone investigating crimes that we do not know about?
Or are they not going to be held accountable? And, if the President can place himself so easily above the law, what should I tell my daughter when she asks me why we have to obey it?
To which I receive a prompt reply:

Oh, responsiveness and accountability. You gotta love it.
Of course, I went to her web site and pasted my response in - so a clever staffer can figure out who Moody Loner is. Of course a clever staffer can take half the time to figure out my identity using Google.
So, on the off chance you or your staff read the Daily Kos, Ms. Feinstein...how do you intend to hold the Administration accountable if impeachment is such an icky, divisive, doomed-to-fail effort?
Or should I be asking if you intend to hold the Administration accountable?
Care to debate it here, or have a staffer come here and discuss it?
Yeah, I didn't think so.
