What Are You Reading, vol. 88: Reading and Writing

Fri Jun 06, 2008 at 05:31:39 AM PDT

plf515 has once again left the care and feeding of this lovely series in my hands.

In exchange, please pretty please write a letter to a soldier!  and email it to me!  I would love a commitment of 5 letters from readers today ;-)

Follow below for book chit chat, and details on the letters.

After a science fiction binge last week, I am reading:
Present At The Future by Ira Flatow, NPR's Science Friday host.  This is a nice overview of the new technical stuff for a layperson like me.  The explanations are easy to grasp.  And I can hear his voice as I read.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, J.K. Rowling:  I am re-reading this slowly, two chapters the first night, and one the second night.  Trying to looks for forgotten details, etc.  I used this technique on the LOTR series recently and it really was very enjoyable.  Relaxing.

Great American Hypocrites: Toppling the Big Myths of Republican Politics, Glenn Greenwald:  This has been heartily reviewed on the front page.  I was a few chapters in when my library books became due, then the sci fi books came out.

ready to start:
Growing a Girl: Strategies for Raising a Strong and Spirited Daughter, Barbara Mackoff:  I am finding my daughter as challenging to raise as my son is.  I hope to gain a bit of insight, and encourage my daughter's confidence.

Shock Doctrine, Naomi Klein:  I was on the wait list at the library for a few months.  I am looking forward to reading the book that everyone else already has.

I leave for vacation Tuesday and I am considering books to take along - something light, not too challenging, and a few books I might not mind leaving behind when finished.  Although, we are driving home together from Southern California so I will have more room and weight in the car than if we were flying.  Hmmm.

The  IGTNT and Mojo Friday crews are pleased to announce that we will be going to Netroots Nation '08 in Austin, July 17-20.  Our joint venture will pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and help those on the ground today with care packages from home.

We want to include at least one letter in every care package.  Please see my most recent diary, and consider writing a letter to a soldier.
Free! Easy! (and no teeth)

We do it because we're Democrats, and because our government won't.
